Cry With Me

On Sunday I decided I was going to finish my Gathered Pullover. I mean the sleeves and collar were done on Saturday. I just needed to attach the sleeves and weave in those pesky ends. I was about to have a FO! Yipee! I was doing the dance of joy joy. I was excited. So why on earth did I decide to try this baby on after only having 1 sleeve attached? Why couldn't I just keep with it and attach the second one before putting it on my body? I do know that I never ever do that again.

After putting on the appropriate undergarments (cause my boobage needs the support for modeling of clothing), I slipped my arms into the holes and pulled the sweater down over my body. I was like, OoOOooOOooo. I then proceeded to check myself out in the full length mirror. What do you think I saw? Well let me just take the guess work out of it. I was now wearing a sweater that did not fit! It's too big. Waaawawawaawaaaaaaah!

I have to say here that I did a gauge swatch. I made gauge both in rows and stitches in the flat and in the round. I felt confident. The first time I noticed something may be off with the gauge was when I did the fronts. I even removed about 20 rows from the pattern on the fronts to ensure a good fit. I tried the sucker on and it was working for me. Now the V is too low and the shoulders are slipping around.

After I completed my first sleeve, I tried it on and it fit me perfectly to where I wanted the cuff to land. 'Cause remember I added some inches to the length of the arm because the orginal was too short for my liking. What happened by attaching it to the body? Did the basement monster's come out while I was sleeping and tinker with my knitting?

So needless to say, I was totally deflated, disappointed, distracted, disturbed and maybe a teensy bit disgruntled. I couldn't muster the excitement to slave over attaching the second sleeve on Sunday. Boo Hoo. I was now doing the dance of disappointment.

I shared my disappointment with a dear friend today. After I aired my feelings about this, she said, "It's gonna be even bigger after you lose weight from all your running!". Waawawaawaaaah! I love her dearly and am not upset over the comment because I was thinking the same thing.

I know I will attach the other sleeve this week!. I will wear my oversized Gathered Pullover proudly! For now my friends, just cry with me.

  1. There's just so much to be said for a big comfy sweater-I HATE it when that happens. I can't wait to see what it will feel like when it doesn't happen

  2. Oh drats! I hate it when that happens, too! Any chance it will go the sexy flashdance look with a cami? Since you're all fit and running and stuff.

  3. Drats! The color is beautiful, contrary to all evidence on my blog, blue is my favorite color. I second the idea of a cami, maybe with an insert of lace and some tight pants to show off the runner legs.

  4. I am definately crying with you. I was looking forward to you telling me that you made it with that yarn, and it was perfect, and I can go ahead and start my own with the same yarn. Now I am scared to start mine in the future. I don't have a whole lot of stuff up top to fill it out if it is too big. VS can't help that much!!! LOL!! Oh, the trials and tribulations us women go through.

So, what happens if you slightly felt it?? You think it will fit the way that you want it?? Try felting one of those swatches.

  5. I'm sending you a virtual hug, that's rough. This is part of the reason why I think all sweaters should be knit top down. The agony of the sweater that doesn't fit as anticipated is pretty rough.

  6. Oh no! So sorry! But it looks absolutely beautiful!

I like the suggestions of a camisole (or other thin layer) underneath and possibly fulling it a bit.

  7. Welcome to my world--Despite all the care and planning and measuring in the world this happens to me way too often. So, one time-tested tip I can give? If it's wool, consider washing it and putting it into a GENTLE dryer, checking on it every couple minutes. The heat and the tumbling can/will shrink it, and as long as you're watching it carefully (do NOT walk away to answer the phone!) you should be able to shrink it just enough that it's wearable. The key word is "careful," it's doable and reasonably controlled.

Really, ask me how I know!

  8. I am sorry, Deborah. It is a lovely color. Did I ever tell you about knitting Samus three times? Too big, too little...

  9. Oh NO!!! I go with the motion for a sexy under layer. I also think some serious steam shrinking might help too. I feel all disgruntled, depressed, & discouraged for you. :) Want to rip & re-do??? Is the bigness only in the shoulder & sleeve area or all over? You can cut it apart & re knit the big areas (especially good to do on the sleeve length.) I've seen it explained in knitting books.Sometimes certain yarns just grow after knitting & I hate when it does that.(ie: puff-sleeve!)

  10. That bites! I'd still wear it just because I like big comfy sweaters. They just make you feel warm and safe. :)

  11. WWWWAAAAAAHHHH! I am sobbing hysterically for you. That truly blows chunks. And it looks so beautiful too all blue & cablely. Gauge is a cruel cruel mistress! Would a visit in the dryer help the sweater any?
